Blu’s Rookie Year :: Johnson&Jonson Next

21 09 2008

Has any other emerging artist in hip-hop had a rookie year as chockfull of material and schizophrenic artistic direction as Blu? While the LA-based rapper seemingly scored the most points with the underground hip-hop head demographic with his collaborative debut with producer Exile,Below the Heavens, he’s since been cranking out albums at an alarmingly rapid pace – his release with Ta’Raach as C.R.A.C.The Piece Talks hit stores months later, and now his latest project with producer Mainframe, known as Johnson&Jonson collectively, is set to be released. The self-titledJohnson&Jonson record drops on September 23, just a year and one month after the whole album cycle began.

Save Trestles :: Fight The Toll Road!

18 09 2008

The Surfrider Foundation has made relentless efforts to stop a proposed toll road that would wipe out Trestles, a world-famous surf break, and destroy 60% of the acreage at San Onofre State Beach, the fifth most visited state park in California. In February, the California Coastal Commission voted to deny the 241 Foothill South Toll Road. Unfortunately, the agency planning this Toll Road has appealed the Coastal Commission’s decision to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and that hearing is next Monday, September 22.

If you live in Southern California, please try and make the hearing. If you can’t make it, or don’t live in the area, visit Surfrider’s Action Network to voice your opinion.

WHO: Surfrider Foundation activists, surfers, hikers and everyone who opposes the extension of the 241 Toll Road.

WHAT: The U.S. Secretary of Commerce rescheduled public hearing regarding the controversial 241 Toll road extension.

WHEN: Monday, September 22, 2008 10:30 AM – 8:30 PM.

WHERE: O’Brien Hall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Del Mar, CA 92014.

LIVE :: A Music and Surfing Experience

9 09 2008

Patagonia ambassador Mary Osborne sent word about the premiere of Live: A Music and Surfing Experience, a new surf film by David Parsa. From Mary, “It’s a killer movie about surfing and music from the ’50s to the present.” Surfing Magazine says of the film, “Live: A Music and Surfing Experience dances through each decade and shows why the two go together like Shaun Tomson and tubes. You’ll be strumming your six string and waxing up before the credits.”

Check out the poster (above) for a partial list of featured surfers and musicians. The screening will be this Wednesday, September 10, 7 pm, at the Krikorian Cinema 6 in San Clemente, CA. If you can’t make the premiere, the DVD is available to pre-order from the filmmaker’s web site. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Jackie Greene :: The Prince of Americana

4 09 2008

Dubbed “The Prince of Americana” by the New York Times, Jackie Greene is steeped in country, blues, jazz, rock and folk traditions, defying easy categorization. This Northern California native has been around for a while, but is slowly defying a new genre of music with his Bob Dylan-esque look and classic American sound.

“I’ve been writing, recording and performing non-stop. I’ve lived in cars, hotels, basements…slept on floors, couches, strange girl’s beds. I wrote lots of songs in those places. Some I’ll never remember, but that’s all part of it, I guess.”

Greene, who happens to be in his late twenties already has four albums out, a DVD, and miles upon miles of touring under his belt. Greene’s newest album, “Giving Up The Ghost” is by far his best work as an artist. He is currently living in San Francisco and touring various places along the east and west coast, although he is scheduled to play 14 shows with Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead) in New York City at the Nokia Theater beginning on Halloween night.

After visiting Jackie Greene’s MySpace I was instantly captured by his sound, but what lured me in even further was his past and his progression as an artist. If this isn’t good music, I don’t know what is.

Delicious Vinyl

27 08 2008

Delicious Vinyl is an American independent record label founded by Matt Dike and Michael Ross in 1987 and based in Los Angeles. Throughout its history, the label has had distribution deals with PolyGram, Warner Music Group, EMI, Red Ant, Rhino and Universal Music Group. UCLA student Michael Ross met New York City transplant Matt Dike while Dike was DJing at a Hollywood club called Rhythm Lounge in the mid 1980s. The pair discovered they were both members of Impact Record Pool, a service that provided new 12″ records to club DJs, and that they shared a taste in soul, funk, and hip-hop. Soon Dike became the top DJ at the legendary downtown Los Angeles club Power Tools and Ross followed suit. In 1987 they founded their own independent record label Delicious Vinyl and the rest is history.

Here is Akron’s own, LeBron James, sporting a Delicious Vinyl T-Shirt ($20) during the USA Men’s Basketball Team’s Olympic preparation sessions in Beijing, China.

BoomBox

27 08 2008

BoomBox is producer/DJ Russ Randolph and singer/songwriter/guitarist Zion Rock Godchaux. This pair of dynamic artists uses their rich musical history and their vision of music and popular culture to deliver a style of music distinctly different from anything heard or seen in music today. This signature sound and show brings live music to a new, elevated level. BoomBox evolved through the common visualization of a pair of forward thinking artists from diverse musical backgrounds. Raised by supportive and musically inclined parents, both Godchaux and Randolph had an obsession with music at very young ages. Godchaux, who grew up with deeply embedded rock and roll roots, began playing drums at the age of two, and played guitar and wrote his own songs as a teen. During the 90s, Godchaux was a well-received touring DJ based out of the San Francisco area. Randolph began as a young drummer, but it’s what was happening behinds the scenes that attracted him most. As much producers as they are musicians, it is Randolph’s understanding of soundscape and Godchaux’s knack for songwriting that keeps BoomBox resonating at higher levels.

Check Out BoomBox Live This Weekend @ Gratefulfest on (8/31/2008) in Garrettsville, OH!

New Black Mountain Tour Dates

22 08 2008

In the Future, Black Mountain will tour North America, as evidenced by the recent addition of new dates to their previously reported summer schedule. In the present, the Vancouver band heads to the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco this weekend and two British Columbia festivals next weekend: Rifflandia and the New Pornographers’ Stanley Park Singing Exhibition.

Somewhat randomly, Black Mountain will play a festival in Brazil in November. Also randomly, they’re on the new UNKLE album.

I recently saw Black Mountain rock the shit out of Downtown Pittsburgh @ the New American Music Union Festival. After seeing them perform Stormy High live I was instantly sold. One Day As A Lion

4 08 2008

One Day As A Lion is both a warning delivered and a promise kept.”

“A defiant affirmation of the possibilities that exist in the space between kick and snare. It’s a sonic reflection of the visceral tension between a picturesque fabricated cultural landscape, and the brutal socioeconomic realities it attempts to mask. One Day As A Lion is a recorded interaction between Zack de la Rocha and Jon Theodore from Los Angeles, California.”

“The name taken from the infamous 1970 black and white, captured by legendary Chicano photographer George Rodriguez featuring a center framed tag on a white wall in an unspecified section of Boyle Heights. It reads: ‘It’s better to live one day as a lion, than a thousand years as a lamb.’ This record is a stripped down attempt to realize this sentiment in sound.”
