Well, it’s about time. A new biopic about Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia is slated for the big screen. Focusing on the future counterculture hero’s early years in the Bay Area before he joined the Grateful Dead, the untitled project will be based on Robert Greenfield’s book, ‘Dark Star.’

Producers have reportedly acquired the rights to Greenfield ’s oral history of Garcia, which counts the perspectives of the musicians, relatives and artist friends like Ken Kesey. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the project will focus on Garcia’s stint in the military, his life-changing car accident and his first interactions with members of the San Francisco music scene, including future Dead bassist Phil Lesh.

Although the Grateful Dead have been the subject of number of documentaries, including the Garcia-directed concert film ‘The Grateful Dead Movie’ (1977), the story of Garcia’s life has yet to be explored on film.

The Beach Boys meets Elton John meets Animal Collective. Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele consists of Jackson, Mississippi native Dent May, who grew up singing in local church groups, acting in school plays, and performing at nursing home gigs with a recorder choir. I know I’m late, but Little Joy is Binki Shapiro, Rodrigo Amarante and Fabrizio Moretti (Strokes Drummer), three friends who dropped their routine at their respective hometowns to make a record in Los Angeles, California. The album was produced by Noah Georgeson (Devendra Banhart). Fab named the band, Little Joy, after a popular local watering hole in L.A.’s Echo Park.

While the path for fixed gear documentaries and videos was largely paved by the San Francisco-set MASH SF, since then many of the recent fixie documentaries seemed to have emanated from another bike mecca in New York. Nonesuch Records is pleased to announce that singer-songwriter-guitaristDan Auerbach, best known as half of The Black Keys, will release his solo debut, Keep It Hid, on February 10, 2009. Dan will begin a national tour with performances in New York City, Boston, and Washington, DC, with opening acts Those Darlins and Hacienda, the latter also lending support as Auerbach’s backing band.

While working on and touring in support of The Black Keys’ most recent album, Attack & Release (read our feature here), Dan also was writing songs that would become Keep It Hid. “This record is a mixture of things I like to listen to, psychedelia, soul music, country harmonies,” he says.

Keep It Hid was produced and engineered by Auerbach at his studio, Akron Analog, and features him playing a variety of instruments, including drums, guitar, percussion, and keyboards. Many of Dan’s friends and family play on the album, including his uncle James Quine, who contributes vocal harmony and electric guitar on the track “Street Walkin.” Other musicians include fellow Ohioans Jessica Lea Mayfield, who sings on the track “When the Night Comes,” and Bob Cesare, who plays drums on “Whispered Words,” a song originally written by Auerbach’s father. Of the recording process Auerbach states, “I wanted a live, organic sound. Nothing was too plotted or planned, just a lot of spontaneity.” The record was mixed by Auerbach’s good friend Mark Neill at Neill’s Soil of the South studio.

The Roots announced that they will be retiring from touring effective March 2009. The move is being made to accommodate their new Night Gig as the house band for Jimmy Fallon when he replaces Conan O’Brien as the host of Late Night in March of 2009. Conan will be moved to the Tonight Show.
