Blu & Exile :: Blu Collar Workers

30 05 2008

This is my anthem! Turn this shit up, it’s the weekend!

Blu is the leader of West Coast Hip-Hop. Since the days of Pharcyde, Freestyle Fellowship, and Jurassic 5, there have been few wordsmiths that have grasped the attention of listeners worldwide. Introduced to NWA and Public Enemy by his father, Blu later was captivated by the likes of Black Star, The Roots, and Common, creating a unique balance that is displayed in Blu’s personality and music.

Blu’s first full length LP, “Below the Heavens” pairs Blu with producer Exile on the Sound in Color imprint. His first single, “Narrow Path” has rocked stages across the world, as fans begin to feel the impact of Blu’s music. His delivery flows flawlessly, while the content reflects the joy and pain of working class youth everywhere. Since the release of “Narrow Path,” Blu has performed alongside Slum Village, X-Clan, Platinum Pied Pipers, Lyrics Born, DJ Houseshoes, and many others, while participating in 3 high-profile nationwide tours alongside musical family members: Ta’Raach, Aloe Blacc, and Exile.

The buzz has fans salivating for new music. Worldwide, people are looking to put hope into the ‘next’ emcee that will give them the same feeling when they first heard Black Thought, Common, or Slum Village. Blu fulfills this need, but maintains something that is entirely new, while not recycled.

Right now Blu is my favorite emcee hands down. He’s taking Hip-Hop to a new level with clear influences from the Golden Age and Dilla, but more than anything, himself.

But hey, don’t take it personal…

I Want This Boat :: The Wallypower 118

30 05 2008

I Want This Boat

The $33 million Wallypower 118 is the sickest boat I have ever seen. It is 118 feet long and powered by five engines; 2 diesels for tooting around the marina, and 3 jet turbines, for pirating at over 70 MPH. At top speed it guzzles a liter of fuel per second, which limits the range of its 22 ton fuel tanks to 400 nautical miles (compared to 1,500 nm if you’re just putting around with the diesels at 9 knots).

Check out more images of the Wallypower 118 BELOW.

Pacific Division Stay True To Hip-Hop

30 05 2008

In an age filled with ringtone rappers smugly gloating about how they “can make a mil sayin’ nothing on a track” it’s no wonder so many Hip-Hop heads are yearning for what many consider the ‘golden era’ of the ‘90s. Yet, while rap in the 90s did embody a certain spirit and depth that is lost upon numerous artists of today, it is important to continue to move beyond the past in order to progress as a genre. Looking backwards will only make for a stale, stagnant product. As we should all know by now, Hip-Hop is not dead; it’s merely in need of a lengthy history lesson in hopes of gaining more respect for its roots, and some direction to guide it in a positive path for the future.

Enter Pacific Division.

Taking a page from the book of Little Brother, Pac Div has found that perfect medium of old-school flavor with new-school appeal; living proof that artists can successfully pay homage to the past without dwelling in it. Managing to make honest tracks without the pretense of materialism and misogyny, the trio [comprised of brothers Like and Mibbs, and their childhood friend BeYoung] have already gotten highly-coveted co-signs from Pharrell, Snoop Dogg, and OKP’s very own ?uestlove, proving that they will be a force to reckon with.

This week, OKP sat down with the Cali natives to talk about what sets them apart from the pack, resuscitating an ailing rap industry and the dismaying verdict of the Sean Bell trial. Read the interview RIGHT HERE.

Xavier Rudd Gets Blue

30 05 2008

Xavier Rudd - BlueBest-selling Australian singer-songwriter Xavier Rudd is set to release his seventh album, Dark Shades of Blue, on August 19th. Confirmed appearances at the Jazz Aspen Snowmass and Bumbershoot Festivals in August and the Austin City Limits Festival in September will bookend a headlining tour that will find Rudd bringing his live performance to cities across the U.S.

Dark Shades of Blue is dusky and cool, more sober than any of his earlier work. Guitar-driven jams expand on a sound only hinted at on previous releases, and distortion often supplants the pretty jangly guitars he’s known for. Mixed by Joe Barresi (Tool and Queens of the Stone Age), Dark Shades of Blue shows Rudd at his most assertive, heavy and psychedelic, and while Xav’s signature didgeridoo remains, along with myriad other instruments and voices, the results are less ‘world music‘ and something more universally global.

The past few years have been a whirlwind for Xavier. In between sold out tours in Europe, Australia and the US, both headlining and supporting the likes of the Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson and Ben Harper, he has been working on the film score for fellow-surfer and Rudd-enthusiast Matthew McConaughey’s Surfer Dude, a film starring McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Willie Nelson. I wonder how many drugs these dudes are using on set? Anyway, peep the track listing BELOW.

Official Track Listing:

1.) Black Water
2.) Dark Shades Of Blue
3.) Secrets
4.) Guku
5.) Edge Of The Moon
6.) This World As We Know It
7.) Shiver
8.) Uncle
9.) Up In Flames
10.) Hope You’ll Stay
11.) Home

Bobby Digital :: You Can’t Stop Me Now

29 05 2008

RZA takes solace in his comic book persona; Bobby Digital to produce a new album entitled “Digi Snax” due later this summer. The first single “You Can’t Stop Me Now” has the instantly recognizable Wu sound with sampled guitar licks, dirty drum kicks and ominous chanting on the chorus complete with the late Ol Dirty Bastard’s drunken crooning. The video is a comic book inspired visual acid trip. Lyrically the song finds RZA in a retrospective state contemplating his street days and his early career achievements. The subject matter of early Wu leads one to believe maybe he was affected a little more by the voices of dissent then he leads on.
